Question

Lying down
Hi, I have a 9 month old German Shepherd female pedigree puppy.  She seems very healthy, lots of energy and enjoys life in the company of our 4 year old Labrador.  She used to eat 2 meals a day, good quality food, and we followed the guidelines on how much to give her.  For the last month or so, she has not wanted to eat in the morning, but still eats well in the afternoon.  She has always been thin, and as she has grown, she is getting very tall and lanky, taller than the Labrador now, but not wider, she still has quite a small head and chest. You can see her ribs and hip bones.  Could the type of food be affecting this? Is there some way to boost growth in a specific area??  The vet agrees that she is 'too thin' and tells us to feed her more.  She's not really interested in more food. Any thoughts?? Thanks for your help, Liz

Answer
When if comes to eating, most Labs and Shepherds are quite different.  She may be worse than many Shepherds, but it doesn't sound like there is much you should do.  She is far better off being on the thin side than being fed an unbalanced diet in an attempt to build weight.  Many of them eventually fatten up.  Give her time.
