Question
Hi dawn,
We have a 11 year old, purebred German Shepard.
She is beginning to show signs of hip problems,Leg turning in,tripping up easily,Her hips are dropping. She doesn't seem to be in any pain at this time. Anything I can do to help her?
She's going to the Vet Wednesday. I know they will be gentle with me so... How long before she's immobile? What exercises can We do, Pain management?Any thing I can do for here I will. She's our "kid" Thanks...Maggie

Answer
Hi Maggie,  You can get her started on Glucosamine, and also walking everyday (but not too far as too much as well too little exercise can aggravate it).  Another great exercise for dysplastic dogs is swimming.  The water supports thier weight and makes the exercise really worthwhile for the hip muscles.  You want to think of building up the muscles around the hip joint, since it is the hip joint that is breaking down.
She could still have a couple good years left.  I had one shepherd who had severe dysplasia at 2 yrs (had two surgeries) and he lasted until 14 before his hips finally gave out.  You can also give buffered aspirin to help with pain.  I would stay away from anti-inflamatory steroids as they are hard on the kidneys.  Especially for her age.  Hope this helps,  Good Luck.
