My GSDs agression since my pregnancy.

Question
My 15 month old male GSD Toby has been behaving more aggressively towards others since I became pregnant.  He is not nuetered, and has never acted aggressively before, but now he is snapping at relatives that he does not see everyday, and chewing up just MY laundry, and NOT my husband's eventhough they are in the same basket.  I was just wondering if their was a possible correlation between the two, or if Toby is just in need of some obedience training.  I appreciate your thoughts on this, as Toby is my boy, and I want to do what is best to turn him back into the playful puppy he is when no one but my husband and myself are around.

Answer
There most certainly is.  I won't speculate on how, but there is no doubt dogs know when their owners are pregnant.  It is quite common for them to become protective.  It is very important for a maturing wolf to protect the alpha female when she is pregnant.

I strongly believe in obedience training.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts.  Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. You really should consider neutering him.  Very few dogs are good candidates for breeding.  Besides helping with the aggression, it reduces his chances of cancer later in life.  It will keep him from going berserk when there is a female in season up wind too.
