Feeding Problems

Question
Our family just purchased a wonderful 8 week old GSP and we are now having problems feeding him. He has refused to eat the Nutro Pork Puppy feed and we have changed him to Nutro Chicken and rice feed. He as eaten his Milk Bone treats and if allowed he will eat a small bag. I am concerned that he will lose weight, but it's only been three days. He drinks alot of water and his treats, he still has energy at this point. Can you suggest something to help us.
Thank you.

Answer
Hi,  First off treats are just that, treats.  They are sweet, which is why the dogs want them so much.  You don't want to get in the habit of feeding him treats instead of food as he will just hold out until you give him treats, just like a kid holding out for candy.  You do want to keep him on puppy food as he needs the extra vitamins & calcium while he grows.  If he doesn't want to eat, try to put warm water on the food to get it to smell strong and entice him to eat.  If that doesn't work, you can always use a small amount of canned food (a tablespoon full), smeared all through the food so that it is all over the morsels and again, entices him to want to eat.  Also, if it is hot in your area, he will drop in the amount of food he eats due to the heat, so feed late in the afternoon/evening to get him to eat.  Hope this helps,
