shepherd puppy - ears

Question
Hi,
I am about to purchase a german shepherd puppy from a very famous around here Heidelberg kennel in Texas.  I found a companion puppy that I really like.  He is extremely friendly, outgoing, laid back.  He is perfect except he's got one normal pointy ear and the other is rounded.  The breeder said either another puppy bit off the tip of the ear or maybe it got caught in the fence.  He says those ears will still change and by the time the dog is mature, the difference will hardly be noticable.  He still wants $950.00 for him.  My question is:  How likely is it that the ears will look almost the same once the dog is grown up?  Could this be a genetic defect as opposed to an injury?  If you can imagine, this is how the ears look:  one is pointed like in german shepherd and the other is rounded like in a husky.  The dog is 13 weeks old.

What do you think?

Answer
Buying a puppy can be stressful.  I have purchased puppies from breeders in the past and have NOT gotten what I wanted because I did not follow my gut instincts.

I cannot see the dog or the ear however I have pups here that are that age and I can tell you that their ears are the SAME both ears the same.

The breeder has seen the ear and it could be that the part bitten off was small and will not be that noticeable as they said.  You will notice.  What really matters is how YOU Feel about it.

If an ear has been bitten off it doesn't grow back.  It is true that ears change but they do not grow parts that were removed.  Follow your gut and determine what you can live with and choose another puppy if this is still bothering you.

In the end You must live with your choice and you have to look at that ear day after day, week after week and year after year.

If looks don't matter thats another ball game.  Purebred pups are expensive.  They cost $1,000.00 plus.  It's easy to fall in love with the pups.  Try to stay rational.  Don't decide until you have thought it over.  You can always wait for another litter, choose another pup or go to a different breeder.  Don't buy unless you find what YOU are looking For and you have no reservations.  Take your time.

Whatever dog you choose please be sure to educate yourself on raising and training a German Shepherd it will greatly improve the bond between you and the quality of both your lives.  Training Books and puppy photos are available on my website http://www.gallantshepherds.com
