Question
I have a 2 month old male GSD. I am new to these kinds of dogs.

I understand about the feeding schedule but I don't quite get the water part. My dog will drink water all day long. It's almost as if he can't get enough. So my question is, when do I say enough is enough and put the water up for the night? When I do put it up for the night he walks around where it is suppose to be and just whines.

Answer
With slightly older puppies that were having trouble making it over night, we have taken it up as early as 7 PM.  Our puppies are crated at night, and we never have left water in the crate.  I think some puppies are slow to relate drinking to their needs at that age.  It is there, so they drink it.  I have even seen them compete for water with each other like it was food.  If he isn't making it over night in a few more weeks, I would start taking the water up earlier.

If a puppy is short water, if you pinch up some skin, it will stay up.  Try that in the morning after going without water all night.  If it smooths out as soon as you let go, he is fine.
