Question
My wife and I recently (10days ago) adopted a 1 1/2 yo GSD female that had been probably in 6-7 different homes before she found a permanent home with us? She has had some training in the past, triing to figure out just how much she knows, but I was wondering how much of the day I can expect her to sleep?
We take her on a 2 mile walk 2 times a day. We have a place we can let her off leash and she can run free  (She absolutely loves it. I dont think she has ever done that before, she also doesn't know how to play anything) But only on some days can we do the trip twice. Unless its raining then we can only take her once., We live in SW florida. So i was just wondering on those days that we only take her once how much we can expect her to sleep?
Thanks for your help.

Answer
As long as dogs are getting a minimum amount of stimulation, many of them are quite content to catch a nap when nothing is happening.  Herding dogs are somewhat more inclined to stay awake, just alertly keeping watch.  She is a shepherd and may have some of the traits needed for that.  Sheep need to spend much of the day quietly grazing.  A good sheep dog will quietly lie there, keeping watch and ready to go into action if a predator comes, or if the shepherd decides it is time it  move the sheep.  Most GSD's don't have the drive for action that causes problems with some Border Collies.

She may not sleep that much, but should spend much of the day quietly watching everything.

It sounds like she may have finally found a home where her owners are doing what she needs.
