Question
We have a 4 year old male German Shepard.  We would like to get another male puppy.  Will this be a problem?  Would it be better to adopt a female?

Answer
Go with the female.  2 dogs of opposite sex nearly always get along.  2 males are less likely than 2 females to be a problem, but no reason to take chances.

Once past 3 years old, many dogs don't want anything to do with puppies, their sharp little teeth, and their biting games.  You need to teach the puppy to leave the older dog alone.  As soon as the puppy starts to focus on the older dog, give it a sharp ''Ah, ah, ah!'' and offer it a chew toy.  It isn't always that way.  We are sitting a 7 year old male Lab Tuesday.  He enjoys visiting us and playing with our 4 month old male Golden.  But then, most of his life he has visited us and had a puppy treat him as a chew toy.
He should tolerate her, but allow him to tell her to leave him around.
