Buying a sheperd

Question
Our shepard of 15 years passed a few months ago. My husband and I are in our late 50's and would like to purchase another one. I have an offer to purchase a 6 month old female for $800, but with no guarantee at the discount price. We need a loving companion dog that will be good with our grandchildren when they visit. We have a large backyard with an invisable fence (we have never used one before). Questions: is there anything I should know about buying a 6 month old puppy from the breeders?
Question: Do you think we can train a shepard to stay in the invisable fence? We live in a subdivision and children are outside playing in their back yards.

Answer
Hi,  yes the first thing I would ask is why the breeder still has the dog.  Also, I would be concerned with a lot of imprinting issues that are very important the first 4 months including socialization w/dogs, people & children, potty training and also would be very concerned that the dog has not been raised as a kennel dog for the past 6 months of its life as you will have major issues with barking and other confinement problems.  Most shepherds can easily be trained to stay in invisible fencing.
Hope this helps,
