Answer
Hi Peggy
Shepherds have the herding instincts to do this and yet it might kill the chickens as mine chase bunnys till they hit the fence under it.
Shepherds hate small animals and do go after thenm as their PREY DRIVE.  U cannot punish them for it but u can get a shock collar to stop it at www.drsfostersmith.com and it will train the dog not to in ten minutes.
At this point the dog is a pup and is chasing just because it is something to do but it will get worse and it will learn to kill and that is A NO NO.
get the training collar and each time it starts to chase, hit it with the highest number, hold for 3 seconds to get a good hit on the dog, then call the dog to u and pity it and it does not know what happened or from where, only that you saved it and it will rely on you for resuce and love.

Pet and praise for coming to you and tell it oh my that hurt, only a battery operated collar make sure it is very tight into the neck the prongs so it works the first and last time against its skin by being so tight then in a few  minutes of training daily  remove it each day and put up till next session.  Never leave on more than six hours and i only left mine on while i was training it only took a few sessions and they learned real fast a huge best investment i ever made to keep my dog in its place and yard.

kind regards
