Diggy holes

Question
My year old german sheperd bitch is digging holes in our new grass.  What can we do to stop her?  We are not home during the day.

She's also very aggressive with each and every visitor we get.  She will bite them if I'm not there to stop her.
My daughter takes her for dog training every 2nd weekend....

Answer
If you leave a young dog by itself all day in a fenced yard, you can expect it to dig holes.  If it is beginning to show aggression, you can also expect other problems.  She is vulnerable to being teased when you aren't around.  That will only make the problem worse.  People can come into the fence or let her loose, or she could jump the fence unless it is 6 feet high.  I might suggest putting her in doggy day care, but you have to fix the aggression problem first.

You must deal with the aggression.  If the instructor of the classes is any good, and many aren't, the classes should go a long way toward helping.  You have a serious problem that is outside my strongest areas.  Good help for a problem like that, is hard to find on the net.  A good private trainer or dog behaviorist is hard to find too.  You could end up having a Cesar Milan believer take your money and say the only solution is a 3 hour walk every day.

I can give you a list of good books.  You may be able to help her with what you get out of them along with some help form the class instructor.

You cannot keep an aggressive dog outside in a fence by itself.  If you can't cure the problem, you may have to give her up.  If so, try a rescue.  You may
find a rescue near you starting at
http://www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm  They take dogs needing a home and retrain them, and then carefully place them in the right home for them.  One might even be willing to help you work with her.
