Question
We just adopted a 1 1/2 yr. old black shepard. We have had several shepards but never saw this. Our pup has an inner claw on his back legs. We don't know if he is pure or not as he was a rescue , nor do we care. Is this claw normal ? Have it removed ? Don't worry ?....Thanks for any response

Answer
If you mean like a front dew claw, it is not normal.  Most dogs only have 4 toenails on each back foot.  As for removing it, I would see what your vet says.

It may be the kind of thing that crops out occasionally even on pure breds.  He could have been bred for show, and discarded because of it.  You might poke around a little.  I find www.akc.org and www.avma.org much more reliable than many other internet sites.  Any kook can put up a site, and many have, filling them with garbage.
