Will my german shepherd always be wary of strangers?

Question
I have my first German shepherd puppy (6 months)called laila. She is a lovely family pet, shes obedient, great with children and very sociable with other dogs.I am a little worried though...she seems to be quite wary of strangers when im walking her and more so with large men.Although she sometimes approaches them,if they try to stroke her she backs away.Sometimes she will just take a disliking to a man if i stop an talk to them in the street an bark at them but not all the time. In the house shes fine when they come in but again, will sometimes just decide she doesn't like them and stand at the door and bark but will be fine with others.Im just wondering will this go when she gains more confidence or do I need to stop it now because I dont want it to escalate in the future because otherwise shes perfect!

Thanks,Liz

Answer
Much of a dog's personality is due to genetics and early socialization, before 12 weeks.  The behavior could get worse as she takes on more and more responsibility for the pack as she approaches maturity.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.

Try to work some with the strangers.  Have them avoid sudden movements, eye contact with her, and letting their teeth show in a smile.  Standing straight, a toothy grin, and looking somebody in the eye can get a man through a difficulty with another man, but bit by a dog.  Treats are very good too.  They are a powerful training tool used correctly.
