Question
My german shepherd is 10 years old and weighs 165lbs  I have tried everything to make him lose weight.  He can no longer walk much.  He has arthritis and it hurts.  He can't run or jump in and out of the truck.  He only wants to lay around, sleep, be petted and of course eat. I want to give him the best senior life I can.  Tell me what your recommend? He is very big boned too.

Answer
Hi Lois,  I would get blood work done to make sure he doesn't have a medical problem like diabetes.  Diabetes is common in GSDs and can cause the problems you are having.  Thyroid problems also cause weight problems.  Feed him a good senior diet specialized for older dogs, and give him the minimum amount.  But get the blood work done first.  Hope this helps,

Dawn
