spaying German shepherd

Question
I am getting conflicting info, vet says spay at 6 mos. but shepherd trainer says to wait to 1 year, as spaying inhibits growth in large breed dogs and may contribute to hip displasia.
Thanks for any help

Answer
This is my first day answering questions in this category and I noted your unanswered question.

I was faced with the same question when considering spaying one of my girls.  I too got conflicting information and provided with different reasons than yours depending on the source. I have come to the conclusion that it is more a matter of preference.

I can't see spaying affecting or contributing to hip displasia as the main concern for german shepherds is that they not JUMP for a year while their joints are growing.  For this reason German Shepherds cannot participate in Agility or Schutzund Jumps until they are a year old.

Some breeders feel that waiting longer to spay allows the dog to start her cycles and therefore helping her to mature or grow up mentally more so if she were spayed earlier.

Vets usually suggest spaying early as it is easier and less expensive to spay at this age.

In the end it is your call.  I hope this helps.
