QuestionI have a 6 month old german sheperd who insists on holding onto his lead every time I take him for a walk. I have to have a halti on him because he pulls so much & without it I have no contol due to his strengh. I also have a problem with him wanting to chase large vehicles, although it has got better as it used to be every vehicle. He does go to puppy classes every week & was neutered 3 weeks ago & I can see a lot of improvement in his behaviour.
I would be grateful for your advice.
AnswerIt sounds to me like it is a dominance issue, and you have taken the 2 steps I would suggest. Both take time, expect continued improvement. After neutering, It take a while for the hormone levels to drop. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. Consistency is very important in training a dog. No 2 dog trainers ever agree completely. Give your instructor's methods a chance to work. If you are still having problems after class is over, post back and I may have some ideas that will help.
