Female in heat

Question
I have just gotten a puppy shepherd and I heard that when they are in heat they bleed. Is this true?

Answer
Hi,

Yes that is correct, but puppies come in heat usually around 9 mos to 18 mos. so if she is younger than this she will be in heat when gets older.   The best thing to do to avoid the mess, the responsibility of an unwanted litter and males dogs coming around and peeing on everything around your yard is to have her spayed BEFORE she comes in heat for the first time.  Most vets are busy this time of year so get in touch with your vet, ask what age they recommend for spaying, and make that appointment.  Females do NOT have to have a heat cycle or a litter before they are spayed.  So please make the call and save yourself some grief.  The cost of spaying will be far less than raising an unwanted litter.

Thanks for your question,
