German Shepherds eating habits

Question
Paoli is our first dog, a male German Shepherd, age- 19 months. He is extremely choosy about food; eats only chicken, mutton, paneer, eggs, milk, rice and wheat bread. He loves cakes. He refuses fruits, dalia, chapati or any vegetables. He is fond of Royal Canine food but it causes constipation and stomach disorder. After every 8 or 10 days he leaves food altogether for one or two days. After that he starts eating the same food. He eats two cups rice and four /five pieces of meat with soup in the afternoon; then 10 bread with half a litre milk and two boiled eggs at night. He is thin but very energetic. Is there any need of concern or is it normal for shepherds to leave food like this and lose weight? Is the amount of food alright for his age? Is it ok to give him cakes?

Answer
Many dogs suffer poor health because they are overweight.  It is quite common for Shepherds to barely eat enough to keep their ribs from showing.  Even the ribs showing a little is OK as long as the dog is getting a good diet.  That would be best done by slowly cutting everything else out and feeding the Royal Canine, Pedigree, or other commercial dog food.  Canine nutrition is well known, but complex.  Dogs can't digest many of the fruits and vegetables that are good for us.  They also need their grains coked more than we do.  More meat can lead to too much fat.  The easiest and safest thing is to find a dog food the dog can eat.  A slow switch avoids digestive problems.  Expect firm bowel movements on dog food.
