my 19 week old gsd keeps chasing his tail

hi  my 19 week old GSD 'Bud' just keeps chasing his tail.  he can do it for ages just going round & round & round to be honest it drives me mad, dont know about Bud! he is great with my 2 children 7 & 8.  people say it could be boredom or attention (dont know why plenty for him to do & play with) but he even does it when we take him for walks just running around in a circle.  when he finally gets hold of his tail he sometimes yelps as though he is hurting himself..... is this something he will grow out of, is it just a play thing.  any help would be gratefull.  many thanks

I don't think it is anything to worry about, and it should decline with age.  You might try some of the kibble balls such as the Buster Cube.  You put the dog's kibble in it, and as it rolls around pieces of kibble fall out.  They may not be quite as good with shepherds that tend to be less food oriented.
