German Sheperd the right breed for me?

Question
Considering adopting a 13 month old neutered male from a senior citizen that is no longer able to care for him. I have had 4 extra large female dogs of various breeds in my lifetime.2 of the 4 from pups, the other 2 from young adult. I have trained them myself.3 of the 4 have been over protective, though not aggressively so. Our "pack" consists of husband, wife, 19 year old and a cat (who is used to large dogs)19 year old is home Fri. through Sun. and summer's. Husband works 40+ hours a week. I would be the main care taker and work about 32 hours a week. After researching the breed, in all fairness to the dog I must ask are we at home enough for the social needs of this breed?

Answer
My biggest question is what hours are people home?  I hate to see any dog go more than 4-5 hours without a break.  If you are gone all day, but one of you is free to give him a mid day break, it should be fine.  You may need to watch things with the cat.  If he hasn't lived with a cat before, he could see it as part of the pack, or lunch.

Over the years, my wife's and my schedules have varied, but one of us was always able to come home at lunch time.
