Question
I just purchased 2 german shepherds from a kennel.  I have noticed that some germans have a straight back and some have a sloped down back, what is the difference?  The kennel where I purchased the puppies from advised me that these dogs will have the sloped back and that is what I am looking for.  These puppies are 3 months old, how can I tell if that is what I purchased?

Answer
Hi Michael
My litter of Dec 4, 03, I had to pick for Shawn in San Diego, CA.  He ask me to pick a female to show if he had time at Seiger shows and to breed later.   I watched the females and narrowed my pick of two and just watched until i made a choice.  I sent the two pics to him so he might want to help with photos from every angle and stacked in a show pose.  He left it up to me, he was delighted when he picked up his gal more than he expected.

If the backs are not sloped or angulated now they will not be later.  Conformation is either their or not.  You cannot make what is not there later.  Pups do change in color in growing and develpe a larger fram as they grow and fill out with proper training, exercie and working them.

A straight back is a strong back, it should be some roached for strength to work and be agile.  Too much angulation they cannot be as strong, it is for show that such low angulation is in the American lines I do not have, my dogs are pure West German Lines from Germany.  Go to my site and look, u can stack up a dog to look angulated, but only enough to let it look proper in the pose for a photo.

Look at the top lines for the roach backs, strong backs.  My male Gino is very agile and fast.  He has little angulation, so I breed him to the females that have some and get super pups to choose from for what the customers want to do with them.  I have pups in search n rescue, k-9 training, protection work, therapy and obedience work.

If u want to show then u want alot of angulation.  Most likely you bought from an American breeder of American lines, so they should be very angulated.  If u do not want to show, then u do not want this angulation on them.  It is ugly and crippleing the dogs to show in our country.

Stack up your pups like in my males page, look how their hind legs stack.  Look at the croup at the tail, does it drop off steep?  If not, then it will not change.  Click on my email on my site and send me photos and I can tell more looking at them in any pose.

Kind Regards
patt
