Do I want a German Shepherd?

Question
Hi and thanks. Me and my husband have two daughters, ages (just turned) 5 and 7.  They want a dog sooo bad.  We have a decent house, fenced yard, and I work out of my home and am home basically around the clock.  I LOVE the German Shepherd breed, but I am truly thinking they are not going to be as "fun" or "friendly" and able to establish the real personal relationship with the girls as I want.

Being honest, knowing what you know, would a German Shepherd be your first choice of a first dog for an approximate setup  as this?  I also would like to have maybe an Alaskan dog.  I want a dog of this size, with longer hair (maybe a collie)?  Anyway, any information you could give me would be great.  I am looking for a new member to our family, who will protect, play with, love, and become friends with EVERYONE (and we all like dogs/animals) in the house.  By the way, we have no other animals at all, and never have had.

Thank you so much for your time.  I would e-mail you a picture of the girls, they are so sweet (and want a puppy/dog real bad).

Answer
Hi Lisa
First of all a puppy grows up to be only as good an adult as the person in charge lets it?  That is to say Positive training, proper exercise daily, proper care of feeding and socializing it through out being a puppy.  Make sure it has its own box or container of toys kept in same place, when it gets into anything, show it the box and tell it to take one of its own.  They do learn our language, especially the Highly Intelligent German Shepherd.
The sled dogs are of very high drive, cannot stand this hot weather too well, so I would rule those out as pets.  The collies are nice but require alot of grooming daily.  Long hair like they have must be kept brushed or they nat up and looked badly.
Most all dog breeds learn to naturally protect to an extent.  The Shepherd does this so normally, but one does not want it to get out of hand.  Mine great people and compete for the first hug or pat on the back.  They are highly intimadating when 8 Shepherds run to you at once.
I only recommend the West German Shepherd NOT Amercian breed.  They have too many health issues and are poorly bred.
Other than that many breeds might fit into your life, I would type in Google and read, look at temperment my number one Priority.  Look at the life span of years, the ones that require alot of grooming becomes expensive.  The ones that make great family pets.  www.dogbreedinfo.com is a good place to find one u might like.

Kind Regards
