My German Shepherds

Question
I have two German Shepherds and I feel a little overwhelmed by both. My youngest, a 8 month old, hit his paw on a large car pull wagon while running very fast! He did make a big deal out of it but got up and walked away ten minutes later. I assumed he was fine, 3 days later he started limping and has since taken to the idea of sitting next to me, "giving me paw" so I will hold his injurded paw. Do you think he is seriously injurded?  He can walk on it and has no trouble moving from one area to another but does seem to be in some discomfort.
My other ordeal is my two year old. She has started licking an area on her back, it is close to the left hip. I noticed it a few days ago, it seems to be a small red area. It does not appear to be pussy but she is licking it constantly so she could be licking any puss away. I checked again today and there is a new small red patch in the same area. Is it normal for them to get these small red rash areas and are they serious?
I live in a small isolated town and the closest Vet is three hours away, but if need be, I will take them ASAP but I dont know the seriousness of my pets problems. Am I a bad pet owner?

Answer
Hi,  Your youngest probably is fine, just has figured out a way to get attention.  Your 2 yr old has a hot spot, and you need to start treating it before it gets worse.  You need to clip the hair around it, and then put medication on it.  You can purchase hot spot medication at most pet stores.  You also want to make sure that she does not continue to irritate it or it will abcess and you will have to take her into the vet.  Hope this helps,
