New gsd cant get along with chihuahua

Question
Hello, and thank you for your time. I adopted a gsd(Princess) from a friend last week because she was relocating and could not take her. She is 3 yrs old and super sweet and very, very smart. Other than being a bit clumsey she is great with my small kids. The problem is that my 1 1/2yr old, 6 lb chihuahua (Bambi) is terrified of her and she acts like she wants to eat Bambi. I tried to introduce them on neutral ground but the Princess was very aggressive and the hair on her back was standing up. I am having to keep them in different parts of the house because I am afraid she would kill Bambi. The kids love the Princess, but if she cant get along with the Bambi then we will have to find her a new home. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and again, thank you so much for your time.

Answer
That doesn't sound good.  I am not sure how much good that neutral ground stuff does.  For now, I would give them more time, carefully supervising them or securely separating them.  Give Princess a sharp ''Ah, ah, ah!'' and offer her a chew toy every time she shows any aggression toward Bambi.  Praise her for any toleration of her she shows.

It may take good leadership on your part.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
