Question
I have a 9 week old German shepherd/border collie male puppy. He is doing pretty well so far, but I am having difficulties getting him to relieve himself outdoors. I do take him out to the park daily for a long walk, but he waits until he arrives back home to use the training pads. I have started to train him on walking with a leash, and understanding simple commands. How do I get him to go to the bathroom outdoors....all I need is for him to do it just once, and I will praise him with a treat....and hopefully start a trend....any suggestions?

Answer
Ah, too bad I have been slow getting back to you, busy weekend.  One that you perhaps would have had time to keep walking until he did finally have to relieve himself.  They can only walk and hold it so long.  An alternative to the walk is a vigorous game of fetch.  At that age, you cna push a puppy too far.  If he tires, let him rest, just don't let him go inside or let him out of your sight.  Often a puppy will need to relieve itself just after a nap, so watch it carefully.  You already have the essential, lavish praise when it finally happens.

I never advise pads due such difficulties.  One other thing is to take the pads outside.

Letting him sniff where other dogs have eliminated may help, but is dangerous.  The period between 6-12 weeks is a dangerous time.  One sniff where a sick dog relieved itself in the last 6 months can bring on parvo or another life threatening disease.  Fail to expose it to strangers, including men, women, children, noise, etc. and you could end up with a misfit you can't take out in public.  They also need continuing contact with other dogs, but it must be limited to ones you know are getting good care.
