Question
I have a long haired puppy (1yrs old today), his right ear is almost up, but his left ear is completely down.  He has been on adult food since about 6 months (due to having a 5 yr old GS..he kept eating hers)  Should I be concened about his ear?  What are some possible solutions?

Thanks!

Answer
I am not sure what to do about the ear.  My usual advice is give it time.  I think it is too late to hope it will come up.  You might ask your vet and the breeder you got her from.  I have heard of surgery.  I have also heard of people gluing or taping the ears when younger, but saw any proof it make any difference.

It was not the early switch to adult food.  Actually that is one of the best things you can do for a Shepherd's developing joints.  It slows growth allowing more time with less stress.  This is not based on the limited experience any one person can ever have, but from a large dog guide school with experience with thousands of large breed dogs.  From their training manual, ''Switch to adult dog food at 4-5 months''.  I seldom see any problems with the ears in their program.
