Question
my new GSD is 3 1/2 months old. when we got him 2 weeks ago, we gave him a bath to get rid of some fleas and ticks. we also gave him frontline that we got from the vet. with all of my GSDs in the past, they have a problem with dry flaky skin. is there any way we can help this? i have heard of putting oil in their food but i am trying to keep my puppy away from eating human food at all. is there anything i can give him? or use on his coat? thank you so much!

Answer
Feed a decent chow and as little else as possible, seldom if ever bathe the dog, and brush it daily with a soft bristled brush. You might add a teaspoon a day of liquid cooking oil to its food.  Modern dog chows are formulated to give most dogs everything they need.  Your avoidance of human food for the puppy is a very good practice.  At least Shepherds usually don't have an excessive weight problem.  Usually if you over feed them, they just refuse to eat any more.

Consider an adult chow.  It won't help the skin problem, but it does slow growth allowing his joints to develop under less stress.
