my pup is devasted when we leave him in his crate and go out for anywhere from 1 - 3 hrs....he also wets in his crate and is now wetting when he sees people and gets excited.  is this normal....he does sleep in his crate and even goes in when the door is open so its not the crate.  thank you.

He may grow out of it, but there are some things you can do to help.  Try filling a Kong with peanut butter and freezing it.  Give that to him when you leave him in the crate.  

Obedience train him.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.

Adding a grid to the crate won't solve the problems, but will make it easier to cope with until you do.  They are available with the crates, but a piece of closely spaced wire closet shelving from a home supply place is cheaper.
