Question
Our Max (German Shepherd)is over 13 years old.  He is a valued member of our family. We love him so Much! We had Max breed a dog and now we have Max's son.  Toke is now almost a year old.  3 months ago he and Max started fighting, I know they are fighting for Alpha position.  Is there anything we can do?  I feel so sorry for Max, he is wanting all our affection and Toke wants it too.  We have tried things, is there anything we can do?  They really fight when we are around and Max being so old is starting to get pretty beat up when Toke gets wound up.  Toke is real playful and only when he loses his temper that they really go at it otherwise he just runs away from Max.  PLEASE HELP!

Answer
Get them both neutered.  Nobody that had much of a female would have ever let it be bred to a dog almost 12 years old.  Maybe you are very happy to have a one of Max's puppies for when he is gone, but you haven't help the excess, low quality dogs problem.

Might I ask if both parents had hip X-rays and eye certification as well as being free from allergies, seizures, and other problems?  How about their parents, grand parents, litter mates, etc.?  Have you ever done any reading about how to breed quality dogs?  Twelve years old is way too old.
