Question
Hi
I have a 3/4 Siberian husky 1/4 German shepherd (dad was purebred husky mom was half German shepherd) puppy who is gonna be 4 months on September 14th (he is 16 weeks). He is about 2.75 feet tall and is very healthy. I wanted to know how if that is the right height for a German shepherd because i want him to be as big as one. Is there any food i can give him to increase size? Thanks a lot!

Answer
The breed standard for Shepherds calls for them to be no more than 26'' at the shoulder.  Your dog must be nearing that now and at 4 months, still should have some growth to come.  You may find this interesting, http://jn.nutrition.org/cgi/content/full/134/8/2027S

Unless stunted by a very poor diet, what you feed a dog has no effect on its size.  Feeding can have a dramatic effect on its joints.  You should be feeding a puppy chow now. Switching to an adult chow for the larger breeds at 4 months, slows growth and helps develop sturdier joints.

Keeping them lean is very important too, but seldom a problem with Shepherds.  Ones that won't eat enough to keep their ribs hidden are much more common than overweight ones.  Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs.
