Sheltered German Shepherd

Question
Good evening.  I am considering adopting a female German Shepherd from the animal shelter.  She appears to be purebred but she is three years old (I was really hoping for a puppy) and 70.2 pounds.  She recently had babies but the shelter is unsure of what happened to them.  I heard that grown dogs can be better than puppies, but I am afraid.  I can't get my money back if it doesn't work out, and they have no history on her.  She didn't pay much attention to me in the play yard because her feeder/walker came in with me.  She's also been in the shelter since March 29th and she has no prospects, besides me.

Would you recommend me getting a three year old dog without history?  She would be a house dog since I don't have a backyard, and we also have a five-month old kitten.  One of the employees took her into the cat area, and not only did she not bark which was good news to me, she jumped when the cat hissed at her.  According to the staff, she's sweet and trainable, but according to a woman who was looking for dogs as well, she was mean and wouldn't stop barking when they had her in another location.

In advance, I appreciate your advice!

Answer
She may be a good dog for you.  Not every dog is typical of their breed, but many Shepherds do have the typical suspicion of strangers and are slow to accept new people.  If you adopt her, it could be a month before she begins to bond well with you.  Once bonded, you could hope for a very loyal dog.
