Question

pic before bath
How can you tell how old a GSD is?  We came across a beautiful, purebred stray without name tag or microchip.  She was posted everywhere for 3 weeks without claim.  She looked as though she had never been brushed, so there was a very thick undercoat.  Her hind legs were grayish, but after brushing we can see a tan stripe coming through.  She's 65 pounds, her back molars appear to be almost all the way in (or they are just very small), no gray on the chin or muzzle (not sure if that helps determine the age, but I thought I'd throw that in just in case is helps) and fairly large feet for her size (which I read was just a myth, but again thought I'd mention in case it helps).  She has a GREAT temperament!  She alarm barks appropriately, settles well and is accepting after initial introduction, great with my kids ages 10 and 14, has a LOT of super cute, clumsy puppy in her play, but knows how to settle.  She didn't know any commands, but is learning heel, sit, stay, down very quickly.  She slept all night in the crate last night and then went potty outside this morning, so we now know she is able to hold her bladder for a full night.  I've had several GSD's, but never from a pup (but feel up to the challange, lol) so we are planning on keeping now.  We will be taking her to the SPCA when they open tomorrow to get heartworm tested, UTD on her shots, and make an appointment to get spayed.  She didn't have any fleas and her nails were well filed, so my thoughts are she was in a kennel on cement because the poor dear's coat smelled like she had been laying in her feces.  We gave her a bath two days ago, combed out bags of undercoat, and will be applying a dose of Frontline today.

Answer
Hi Brenda,

Sounds like you found an awesome dog for your family.  She doesn't really look like a pup, just has nice bone and good feet.  So I would say she is at least a year old.

The gray hair is just dead undercoat, so not to worry about her being old.  You are doing all the right things with her and I applaud you for rescuing her!  I love these happy endings. She will have a forever home and be loved and looked after.  One more thing, she could be spayed already so make sure they check before they open her up.  Good luck with your new dog and have fun training her!
