Max

Question
Well, the breeder said Max is very showable.  He has something about him that kind of says " look at me ".  He seems to be very outgoing, friendly and confident.  The price he quoted for Max was $1200.  Some puppies are $ 5000.  To me they all look the same but I guess some are more showable than others.  He sells companion puppies for $900 or $950.

Max had his second set of shot on Monday.  They told me that all he'll need is rabies at 8 months.  My concern is that I won't be able to take him to obedience without rabies.

The reason why they don't allow their puppies to leave the kennel before they are 14 weeks is so they don't get parvo.  I think they also want to know for sure how much each puppy is worth because sometimes the price for puppies goes up and down as they grow.

Is it possible that Max would have had all of his shots by the time I pick him up on Saturday?  I sent you two pictures of Max to the email on your website.  Could you tell me what you think about him?

Answer
Max is definitely a cutie, nice markings, nice black and tan coat! But I cannot determine by the pictures if he is showable.

To determine how showable a dog is would require comparing that dog to the Breed Standard, in your case the standard set out by the American Kennel Club.

If you intend to show your pup it would be a good idea to get in touch with professionals in your area or ask your breeder or other breeders in your area for assistance.

Most pups are sent to new homes by 8 weeks.  Some breeders have been known to keep pups for longer out of concern for their health.  There is a period of time, between the 1st and second shots when the pup should not be exposed to other dogs.  It appears this breeder keeps them for that reason, but I cannot speculate as to the true reason for this as being either for health or for money.

Pups require 3 sets of shots plus Rabies.  Usually given the 1st shot between 6-8 weeks,  The Second Shot 1 month later, the Third and Rabies 1 month Later.  Check with your breeder about what shots where given and request Proof of Vaccination Certificate to provide a trainer.  Also check with your trainer as to what is required as proof of shots.

If you have further questions about these issues I recommend getting a second or third opinion from a Vet other breeders in your area.

Glad to be of assistance once again,

Sincerely,
