Diet and Behavior for German Shephards

Question
Hi Dawn,
I have two new 6 week old german shephard male and female pups.  I want to provide a good diet for them and quite honestly, am very confused about what is the "best" with an economical price.  I have decided to feed them Purina Pro Plan for Large Breed Puppy Formula with DHA.  Should I be giving them a supplement at this time; example, calcium  or multi vit.?

Also we are slowly introducing crate training.  I realize this will be some time as their little bladders cannot tolerate along time without relieving themselves.  My question is, should I be concerned about fighting issues between the two pups now and later on?  I will be "fixing them" spay/neutering around 6 mos. old.  Thank you for all your great online support.  Be Well!

Answer
Hi,  You shouldn't start any supplements until they reach the age that their ears start going up & down.  Normally that is around 6 months of age.  Then you can give a calcium supplement until the ears are fully up.  Otherwise most name brands have all the vitamins you would need.  You should keep them on a puppy food until two years of age so that they get all the extra calcium & vitamins needed for their bones to fully set.

As far as sibling fighting, that is not uncommon and they do need to work out who is dominate in their relationship.  The female will probably be the dominate of the two as that is common in nature.  Even though the males are considered the leaders of the pack, the females will be more dominate when it comes between a male & a female.  Hope this helps, and if you have anymore questions, feel free to let me know.
