Killing animals

Question
My 4 year old German Shepherd, Blaze caught another small animal in the year.  She is constantly chasing trying to get birds and squirrels.  Last year she finally got a opossum and killed it.  Yesterday I found her in the backyard with a rabbit in between her paws and she was not cuddling it with blood in various spot.  I am worried that this is not common and something is wrong with her.  She has never once snarled or tried to bite me or any others.  Then someone proceeded to tell me that once German Shepherds get a taste of the warm blood they basically go after small children.  That was horrifying to think of.  Please help me with this very overwhelming problem.

Answer
Some dogs have a very high prey drive.  I doubt you can do much about it.  If she was exposed to small children as a young puppy, I can't imagine her harming them.  Keep cats away from her.

The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts.  Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
