Puppy nipping

Question
I know puppies "mouth", but my 13 wk. old GSD/Rottwiller female is biting me and drawing blood, over and over again.  My Akita puppy was an alpha male, and was really difficult, but this little girl is worse.  I think it is excited biting, but may be an "alpha" struggle at this point.  I don't know.  I've tried No and Ouch and providing a substitute chew toy for my hand.  I work in a hospital, and it is unsafe for me to have numerous cuts on my hands, and legs.  She is quite wound up from being in her crate 4-1/2 hrs. in the a.m. out for lunch (1/2 hr.) and back in for 4 hrs.  She does better on the 3 days per wk. that I am home.  Please help us.  She is a rescue.

Answer
Hi Kitty,  This is not an alpha struggle, she is teething and is doing what she would do with other puppies, just knawing on you out of play & affection.  You need to put your hand over the top of her muzzle when she tries to bite, and pull her upper lip down over her teeth and then push the lip back up against the teeth.  At the same time tell her no.  Then give her something else to chew on.  What will happen is that she will associate that pain with nipping so she will learn by association.  Hope this helps,
