QuestionI have 4 dogs and 3 cats, 2 of the dogs are poms, mother and daughter, and although all the animals get on like brothers and sisters. They tend to show teeth and snarl over things like the couch. Usually our 2 poms sit on the couch and watch television with us, because the other two dogs are two big. but this seems to create a hierachy with the poms, and when we show attention to the other animals, the poms will run to another room and start barking so we go to them. The poms have become real attention seekers, and vicious by showing thier teeth to the other animals and showing thier position.i am wondering how to create a balance with the all the animals, seeing as the poms are toy dogs, and our other dogs are big. With have two girls, mum is 11, and her daughter is 2 months. thanks :)

It's great that they all get along so well! What you are describing is pack behavior. It sounds like your poms are at the top of the pack! Please go to: www.pugs.com/alpha.htm for more information. You mention that when you show attention to the other animals, the poms will run to another room and start barking for your attention and you'll go to them. Do not go to them when they demand it! You are the alpha dog in your pack and you decide when to stay or go. Ignore them or better yet tell them to be quiet and make them! Higher physically means higher socially to a dog. Make the dogs get off the couch if they become snappy and dominate. Also, with four dogs you must respect the order among them. If the mother pom is alpha then go with that. Size makes no difference. Just don't let them become alpha over you or other family members.
