Question
We adopted an 11 month old pom.  (owners having baby and 3 yr old, couldn't keep up with puppy) We've had her for about 6 weeks now and she will not play w/ her toys.  I've spent a small fortune on every type of toy and she came with several plush/squeaky toys.  At first she was afraid of the squeaky ones, but doesn't seem to be as afraid, but will not play/chew on them.  She will chew on rawhides and nylabones (and an occasional shoe!).  She will play with the balls (tennis and white plastic) by herself and eventually chew them to pieces, but as soon as we get down to enteract with the play, she'll stop playing with the ball and just want attention like trying to get you to rub her head/belly. I've even tried putting toys in a bag w/ treats, hoping to get the scent on them and she'll want to chew on them.  Nothing is working with her. Please HELP. Can you give us some suggestions.  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Donna,

My pom doesn't enjoy chewing on the squeaky toys, either.  He likes to play tug-of-war with plush, lambs-wool type toys for short periods of time, say 15 minutes or less.  He also likes a kong with cheese, peanut butter or bisquit inside.  Every dog has preferences. Sounds like she hasn't had a lot of exposure to toys.  Be patient, over time she will probably come around.  When you get down on the floor with her, rub her head and tummy first and then try to play.  You can offer tasty treats to help encourage her as well.

Hope you enjoy your new puppy!
Best Regards,
Carrie
