Question
I just e-mailed you and asked some ?'s about my 8 week pom. In you answer that you gave me you said something about the coat having alot to do with the breed, trimming, and food. So could you please tell me how you should keep your pom trimmed and what you think the best food for a puppy pom of 8 weeks old. I don't plan on showing my dog, but I love the way they seem to keep the hair of the show dogs! Thanks Brandi

Question -
Hello! I have recently purchased a pom that is 8 weeks old. My first question is when would it be a good time to have him first groomed at a groomers? The next thing is what would be the best kind of brush to use on him? One more question I have noticed by doing research on the computer that some poms have thicker hair that stands up better than others. Is this because their a better breed, or is it because they have been groomed better? Thank you and I appreciate your time.

Answer -
I don't find that a Pom needs a lot of up keep like other
breeds.  I would find a soft bristled brush to use on him
now so he gets use to it.  You need to bath him when he is
dirty and use a hair dryer to blow him dry. If you still want to take him to a groomer's start at about 6 to 9 months.

And you are right about the difference in coat.  It depends
on a lot of factors like breeding, trimming and feeding.

Answer
I would just brush the coat now with a soft bristle brush.

You will see this pup go through a puppy shed and that is when I use a comb/rake to take out all the dead undercoat.

I have just started using Chicken soup for the soul (puppy)and so far the dogs really like it.

Let your groomer keep up your Pom after 9 months old.
