How do I get my pom to look like a show dog

Question
Hi Trish I am the proud owner of a chocolate brown pom that was often said to resemble a bear cub as a pup (and even still now even though she's almost 2).  When she was a puppy she looked like a little round cotton ball and her hair would stand up, and now that she's older she has a beautiul mane and is very fluffy but I want her fur to stand-up as it did when she was a pup.  I try brushing it forward as I've heard from other pom owners but I notice the dogs on tv tend to look like their fur has been teased.  Is their some secret to getting the look I desire? Should I take her to a groomer?

Answer
That is so funny! I have one of my former pups here being groomed today (all my pups get to come back for free grooming) and his mama wanted to know why the Poms on tv looked so fluffy and her Harry had "droopy" hair... :)

So I now have him groomed up like a show dog.

The dogs being shown are sculpted.  The coats are trimmed down to where they stand up-the weight of the coat natually makes it hang and fall over the body instead of stand out from the body.

Now this is only going to work if the Pom has a correct double coat.  Many pet breeders, puppymills and pet stores sell flat or open coated Poms which are too soft and don't have the correct texture or double coat as they should-they are an arctic breed.

You can buy the Karen Crawford grooming tape and learn to do it yourself. :) Or you can find a show groomer-a regular groomer will not give you the same results. ;)

Best of luck!
