Loose Knee Vs. Luxated patella =(

Question
Hi again Trish, Well a week ago my 8 month old pomeranian ran so fast he accidently tripped over his leg and immediately started crying.  I picked him up and rubbed his right leg, eventually he stopped as if nothing ever happened and continued playing.
His leg lagged around a bit but he strugged it off.  After a few days he started to limp a few steps and suddenly again starts to run around with no pain of any kind.  I was worried so I took him to the Vet to get checked. The Vet said he has a loose knee cap.  Two options he gave me, I could either retrict his activities(no jumping, running, romping) for 30 days, he gave me anti-inflammatories (Rimadyl) for his knee and to see if all is well and report back to the Vet. Second option was what I dreaded..Surgery! As of surgery I have been really considering that option for my pup's benefit because the older he gets the worse his knee condition could get so I'm aware of that.

Now questions to you Trish is.. I hear that many small breeds that have a luxated knee live normal lives is this true? Is this similar to this condition?  What age would be fit for a puppy to go into surgery?

Answer
Sometimes surgery makes it worse and many times lots of vets don't understand that not all luxating patella's require surgery.

Get a second opinion from a vet familair with toy breeds.

In the mean time you can keep him on the anti-inflamatory meds, give him glucosamine and keep him resting for a few weeks to allow it to heal.

Luxating patella's caused by genetics are from a leg bone that has a slight bow to it but can also be caused by an injury which would not be genetic.

Best of luck!
