QuestionI am purchasing a pup that appears to be wolf sable, which the breeder says is "rare". Could it change colors significantly after losing its baby hair? Also, it is 7 weeks old and weighs 7 ounces, does this sound average or on the small side? It has tiny pads on its paws and comes from a litter of four, but is not the runt. Thank you for your thoughts and advice on

AnswerHi Bonnie,
In a wolf sable the undercoat is light grey with a deeper shade of steel grey guard hairs ending in black tippings. Does your puppy look like this? Some breeders will say a puppy is a rare wolf sable and it's not. Sometimes they really think it is and sometimes they are just plain lying. The coat color could change some.

The general rule of thumb is that a eight week old puppy will triple it's weight and possilbe add an extra pound. Sounds like your pup will be on the small side--about three or so pounds. Breed standard is 3-7 pounds.
