Question
Hi,
I am in college in Philadelphia and I have been considering
getting a dog for quite some time now.  I have researched
Poms & think that they would be a nice fit for my style of
living.. work, school, going out occasionaly at nights but
not going crazy.  When I graduate and will be working in
NYC and want a dog that will do well in the city.
I have read that they are easily trained in 1-3 months,
females are not as 'yappy', they are self-sufficient
throughout the day when left alone, and great overall
companions.
My question is your expert opinion of my situation.  Is it a
bad choice to persue my desire to own a little companion at
this point in my life or will owning a Pom go horribly bad in
my situation.  Thanks so much!  All information is greatly
appreciated.

Answer
Poms are great apartment dogs.
Girls are absolutely no easier or harder to own/train/keep than boys.  Choose a Pom that suite your personality not by its gender. :)  Posm are "middle of the road" as far as trainability-in all the hundreds of AKC breeds.  It all depends on how much effort you are willing to put into the training.  It takes a lot of patience to work with a baby and it takes a lot of persistance.  You can also litterbox train them. :)
Depending on where you get your Pom (genetics and envirnment) is how yappy it will be.  This also goes with how snappy it will be too-yu want to get a pup that has benn WELL socialized.
They make GREAT companions but you will need to be sure to leave a lot of toys and food and water down for them while you are away so they don't get bored.  Pups cry a lot at first while alone as they are used to being with others.  It doesn't last though.

Best of luck with your search!
