Question
I have a 10 week old female pom.  She is wonderful!  However, she has an open fontanel.  I am wondering what types of problems this might cause later and what, if any, changes need to be made now.  She also has difficulty seeing and is unable to chase a ball or anything of that nature.  She is able to get around the house fairly well now since she is aware where everything is and has good ears and sense of smell.  What should I do to help her and what am I looking at long term?  Getting rid of her is NOT an option so I need to know what to expect and how to make the best of it. Thanks so much for your help

Answer
Open fonts is a major fault when breeding-meaning dogs with this shuld not be bred.  It can cause serious injury if it falls or gets a bad bump there.  It can also be a sign of hydrcephalus.

What you describe sounds more like this than what can be explained by just an open font.  An open font CAN close slowly over the next 6 months.  Some of my pups have been born with one that closes by 3 months.  Have your vet check to make sure it is not a sign of something more serious.

Best of luck!
