Very Matted Pomeranian

Question
I kind of inherited a 4 year old Pomeranian from a deceased family friend and have had her now for about almost 5-6 months.  We have bathed her and did not know that we had to keep brusing her kind of constantly to keep her fur from becomming matted, well of course we are learning the hard way.  The family was going to put her down bu I took her over and they could not find any of her shot records or anything, so I took her to The Banfield Animal Hospital and it is located within a Petsmart which does dog grooming.  Today we took her to be groomed and she would not let anyone get her out of the cage.  Usually she is very docile and mile mannered, but for some reason they could not cut her and they phoned me to come and pick her up and they would not charge me for anything since they couldn't even bathe her.  The young man let me come in the back where they keep the dogs in their kennels prior to bathing and ect and said that she wouln't come out of the cage without snapping at him, so as soon as she saw me....needless to say I had NO PROBLEM retrieving her and I asked him if it would be okay if I stayed with her while they bathe and shave her and due to the time today he said it wouldn't be possible.  So I rescheluded her another appointment for Monday at 7am and he said that I can stay.  Unfortunately she is sooooo matted that she is going to have to be shaved completey, which is not a problem for me, but I'm sure it may be for her.  Another groomer said that she would try and groom her Monday and if she could not then she could recommend a VET to put her to sleep to be groomed, which I believe is a bit EXTREME.

Is there any other way that we can deal with this? Another thing I failed to mention was that the area she was caged in was very Noisy from the big ventilators that were directly above her head and I told them that having her in this particular cage and area could have played a big part in her being scared and over-stressed.  What do you think?

Answer
I would not suggest sedation by the vet to groom this girl.

Years ago I bought a male that was from one of the best bloodlines in the states and I couldn't believe his coat
when I picked him up at the airport.  It took me several weeks to work just different areas of the dead undercoat out.  My suggestion is to bath her in Mane N Tail shampoo
and use their conditioner.  Get a grooming rake and slowly
groom different areas at a time..when she has had enough
put her up until the next day and work on another area.

Shaving also bothers me as you looking at possible sunburn and how much coat will she have when cold weather hits in
a few more months?  All this will take time but you can get rid of all matting just taking your time.
