Pom Pup

Question
Dear Carrie,
I recently bought a Pom puppy, the breeder gave me all kinds of instructions, but I was so overwhelmed and busy falling in love with the puppy to absorb it all.  He is 12 weeks old and did come from a reputable breeder.  I have been feeding him a handful of Iams Orignal puppy dry food mixed with two spoon fulls of Iams Puppy formula canned food, how long do I feed him this way?  When should I start giving him more and when that time comes how much more should I give him?  The can says puppy should eat 3/4 to 1 can per 5lbs, but he's not even that yet.  He almost always finishes all of the food, but there are times where he does leave a small amount in the bowl then never goes back for the rest.  I feed him like this twice a day.
Also could you give me some tips on housebreaking, I understand that he is still very little and that he doesn't have a whole lot of control over his bladder, but I felt like I should be trying so he doesn't get used to going in the house.  I have been putting him close to the accident and hitting the floor (not him) right next to it and saying no, then taking him outside to show him where he is supposed to go.  If you have any additional tips I would love to hear them!
He also has a problem with crying at night, I expected it to happen, but it seems to be getting worse the longer he is with us.  We keep him penned up in the kitchen, he has a bed and some water in there with him as well as a few toys and a rawhide and the first night he cried and whimpered for about half an hour, and the night after that it was about an hour, now it seems like every night he cries the entire night.  I'll finally fall asleep and wake up in the middle of the night to find that he is still crying.  He is a very happy puppy and seems to love it here as long as we are awake and he's not penned up.  I understand why he does it, he doesn't like to be alone, even when we went to pick him up the breeder only had him in the puppy pen by himself for a few minutes and he started to cry, she brought in a puppy who was playing outside to keep him from crying.  So I understand there may be no solution to this until he is potty trained and we can let him sleep in our room in his bed, but I didn't know if there was anything I could do to help the situation at all.  I don't mind the crying or loss of sleep myself, I understood that puppys can be a lot like newborn babies, but I just feel bad hearing him cry all night.  Okay well I'm sorry for the very long question, I just want the best for my puppy!
Thank You!

Answer
Hi Christina,

At Petsmart.com in the middle of the home page is a pet food calculator.  As long as he's not getting fat, I would feed him as much as he wants.  My adult pom is 7 pounds and I feed him twice a day (about 3/4 cup total).

Here is a response I wrote on housetraining that you may find helpful:
It will take lots of patience and persistence.  Some pups can take several months or so to train.  Do not allow the puppy to have free reign in the house until he is completely trained.  When you are home keep him with you at all times.  When you leave the house either put him in a crate (never for more than four hours at a time) or block him off in a small area (bathroom, utility room or kitchen) with a gate.  Put newspaper or
puppy pads in an area for him to use.  Neutering him by five or six months of age will help, and can prevent him from developing the habit of leg lifting.  If he has an accident but you don't catch him don't scold him for it.  He won't understand what he's done wrong.  Clean up the mess completely.  Using a product like Simple Solution will remove the stain and the odor.  If you catch him it the act, firmly say, "NO" and take him outside.  Never rub his nose in it.  He can be trained to go in a particular area in your yard and to go on command.  Take him to the
same spot every time and use the same command like, "Go Potty".  Praise him when he goes!  Of course you'll want to take him out frequently, especially after sleeping, eating, and playing.

I was never able to use a crate for training.  My pom would go potty in it.  I blocked him off in the kitchen and set up a dog liter box.  I didn't use dog liter but lined the box with newspaper.  Puppy pads would work
as well.  I would put him in the box and say, "Go potty".  If he did I would praise him profusely.  Sometimes I would give him a treat.  I always took him to the same spot outside too.  It took approximately two and a half months and after I had him neutered at five and a half months he was pretty much trained.  I kept him blocked off in the kitchen when I had to leave the house for about the first year.  Now he has free reign when I am gone.  He is liter box trained and trained to go in a specific spot in the yard.  Having him liter box trained is great for when I am gone and when the weather is bad. (Rain, snow, etc.)

Dogs are pack animals and don't like being alone especially if you are in the next room!  Can you put him in a crate near your bed at night until he is house trained?  You might have to take him potty in the middle of the night. When you put him in the crate at night (make sure he's went potty first), be real sweet and calmly let him know it's time to go nite, nite.  If he starts to cry tell him to, "Be quiet and go nite, nite", or a similar command.  After that, ignore him.  It shouldn't be long before he'll go to sleep. If you take him out at night to go potty no matter how adorable he is resist the temptation to play with him.  Be all business or else he will get you up in the middle of the night to play!

Hope you enjoy your puppy!  Let me know if you have any more questions.
