QuestionThank you so much for this question forum. I've had a pom for eight months. She was given away twice before. For three years she lived under the bed of a man who was in kidney failure and let herself out of the Florida condo to go to the bathroom. She never had toys, chewies or saw a Vet. She now lives in paradise with me and my papillon. In the short time here she's gone from 7 pounds to 12 pounds. X-Rays showed a trachea problem and the weight adds to this. What can I safely feed her and how low can I cut down her intake for safe weight loss? She lives to eat. My vet. says she should weigh 8 pounds at the very most. Thank you, B. Duprey p.s. she eats lean chicken and pork and a bit of dry kibble at this time.
AnswerIt is safe to fee her about 1/4 cup of raw food a day and you can supplement with a raw duck or chicken foot for chewing and for calcium. You can also supplement with beef knuckle bones to give her something to knaw on. :o) You will notice a healthier girl once you get the weight off her.
Here is some info on collapsing trachea-

You could also offer her a handful of greenbeans before bedtime.
Best of luck.
She is lucky to have you!
