Question
hI cARRIE,

CAN YOU OFFER ME ANY SUGGESTION ON HOW TO HELP MY 7WEEK OLD 1.8OZ POM PUPPY MAKE HIS TRANSITION TO HIS NEW HOME.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP SOOTH HIM AT NIGHT WHEN HE TRIES TO WHINE, CONSTANTLY. EXPECIALLY AFTER GOING OUTSIDE FOR HIS AM....POTTY TRIP. HE TENDS TO WANT TO STAY UP AT PLAY (3:00AM) i DONT THINK SO.

HOW MIGHT I HELP HIM GO BACK TO SLEEP?

THNX IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP

Answer
H Sarah,

Spend as much time as possible with him.  This will help him bond to you and make him feel secure and will make him a better dog.  Start training him too.  He is very young so you'll need to be patient with him and not expect too much.

Put him in a crate (with blanket) near your bed at night until he is house trained.  When you put him in the crate at night (make sure he's went potty first), be real sweet and calmly let him know it's time to go nite, nite.  If he starts to cry tell him to, "Be quiet and go nite, nite", or a similar command.  After that, ignore him.  It shouldn't be long before he'll go to sleep. When you take him out at night to go potty no matter how adorable he is, resist the temptation to play with him, be all business, take him to go potty and put him back in the crate. You don't want to be mean about it, be loving--just don't play with him.  Don't try to "soothe" him.  He'll be ok, just ignore him if he whines or else he will never stop this behavior.

Hope you enjoy your puppy!  Let me know if you have any more questions.

Regards,
Carrie
