QuestionHi.
I have a Pom that just turned 1. She is sweet and loving, but it is getting close to summer so she gets hot really easily. It's hard to take her places because I fear that she will get too hot. I live in a cool place, most of the time, the hottest it gets is 80degrees F other than extremes but I plan to take her to a hotter place to visit my relatives this summer. I was wondering if i should get her groomed, by that I mean getting her hair cut or shaved. I have researched and found that there are 3 basic cuts for a pomeranian: Lion-cut, teddybear cut or puppycut, and a shave. Which one should I get, if any? And does it actually help her stay cooler with shorter hair?
Thank you.
AnswerHi Jaclyn,
They may stay cooler with less hair but, I do not recommend giving a pom a haircut because it may take a very long time to grow back. This is referred to as post-clipping alopecia. Also, a pom should never be shaved. Their coat gives them protection from the elements.
Here's a few ideas to keep her cool:
1) get her wet
2) get her a cool bed/mat to lay on such as: Drsfostersmith.com (Body Cooler Pet Mat)
walgreens.com or easysource.com (canine cooler pet bed)
3) try a thermo cooling bandana or collar
carealotpets.com or dogcooler.coolerbars.com
4) body cooling accessories

Let me know if you have any other questions.
