Buying a Pomeranian

Question
Hi Sheri! My name is Beth and I am seriously considering buying a Pomeranian.  I know very little about them, and thought you may be able to help me out a little bit.  I have several questions.  First of all, roughly how much do they cost?  Are they hard to take care of or high maintenence?  Do they have serious medical conditions that I should know before owning one?  Are they good with other animals (i.e. a cat)? Are they friendly and lovable, cuddly animals?  Are they good with children? Are they loyal?  I know these are a lot of questions, but I would greatly appreciate your help.   Thank you so much!

Answer
Beth,

Hello!  I'm so glad that you are considering buying a Pom.  I will help you make that decision!

I'm going to answer each of your questions in seperate paragraphs, that way you won't get too confused!

Now, about the cost of Poms.  That depends on if you want one that is registered with the AKC or CKC, or if you want one that is not registered.  Either way, that are kind of expensive.  My Pom is registered with the CKC (Continental Kennel Club) and I paid $250.00 for her.  Most Poms that I see for sale are usually around $200.00 - $250.00.  Even if they aren't registered, they still cost around the same, unless they are bred with something else.

I'm going to be honest with you.  Poms ARE high maintenance.  They require LOTS of brushing because they go through a couple of sheds each year, and they require lots of attention.  Because they are smaller, you have to watch them a lot more closely.  Other than that, they really aren't that hard to take care of, besides needing LOTS of love and attention!

Most Poms do not have serious medical conditions.  Some Poms may suffer from hypoglycemia, which is when their blood sugar levels drop dangerously low.  What causes this is extreme activity, heat, and other things.  I give my Pom honey if I think her blood sugar level is dropping.  Other than that, most Poms are fine.  Should you decide on a Pom, you need to ask the sellers of the Pom about any genetic disorders.

Poms are wonderful with animals.  Kricket thinks that everything (including cats) should play with her.  Poms are very lovable and are hyper and expect everyone to play with them.

They are extremely lovable and when my husband is not in the bed with me when I go to sleep, Kricket gets on his side, under the covers, and sleeps with me.  She especially loves my family, the men in particular!  She loves men!  I don't know why.  She throws herself down and rolls when someone does not pick her up!

Poms are real good with children.  However, it is not a good idea to get a Pom if you have children under the age of 10, because Poms are so frail and can be hurt real easily.

Poms are loyal.  My Pom acts like she loves my mama more than me, but after being at my mother's house for a whole day, she starts crying wanting to go back home with me.  They will become extremely attached, so if you get one, please make plans to keep it forever!!

Hope I've helped you, and should you need anything else, please feel free to ask.  Let me know on your decision, and good luck!

Sheri B
